I think that kids media gets a bad rep. I think that much of it is full of joy and something innocent lost in a lot of media aimed more at adults.

I think that the adult bias against kids media comes from two places. The first is a snooty-ness and lack of joy in adults. They have lost the ability to be silly, or maybe its just that as they grew up silliness itself was discouraged by all the serious adults around. I think this is a real pity. By the way if you’re interesting in an incredibly silly and thoroughly enjoyable kids program I suggest you give Adventure Time a go.

The second problem is that kids aren’t very discerning. This is obvious, after all a lot of them are Roald Dahl fans. The result is that it is possible for some less than brilliant kids media to be produced and become very popular.

These two points do not mean that there isn’t much kids media out there which is brilliant. It’s often faster moving and more exciting than a lot of stuff that is aimed at adults. I also think that there is much adult media which is frankly not very good, there are many TV series (some very popular) where I have failed to get past the first few episodes. I’ve also chosen not to complete several books. Thanks to films being short I will generally manage to get through them!

I guess my point is that just because something is aimed at children does not mean you shouldn’t consider giving it your time. In the last few years I think the best television I have watched is the Avatar cartoons (these are nothing to do with the Avatar blue people movies). However, the live action movie based on these (Avatar: the last air bender) was not great. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the books “A Wrinkle in Time” and “The Ocean at the end of the lane”. These examples may not be for you, however, I suspect it would be worth looking through a list of acclaimed kids media, I suspect you will find things that you relay enjoy.
